1 hambone with a little meat on it
1/3 cup grated onion
1/2 cup grated carrot
1/2 cup diced celery
1/2 cup cubed potato
1 can tomatoes
1 tablespoon ketchup
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon salt
1 small bay leaf
6 whole cloves
Put all ingredients in a kettle of water, tying the bay leaf and cloves in a piece of cheesecloth. Simmer about 1 hour. Remove hambone and the spices. Cut any pieces of meat away from the bone and return to soup.
Makes 4 servings. If ham is very salty, reduce amount of added salt.
